The art of cartography is to present complex or explanatory spatial information in a visually simplified way. Phenomena, facts and processes that occur in the world are depicted on a map sheet or screen that is considerably reduced in scale.
For this purpose, typical features are selected, simplified for display and represented by means of cartographic pictorial symbols. The simplification of the original data and the design and arrangement of the pictorial symbols are carried out in such a way that the map user can easily absorb and understand the information.
